Everyone has a story. Of how they were treated with less than dignity and respect. Of being made to wait, of losing control, or feeling powerless. Of errors being made, wrong drugs being given. Of chronic diseases poorly controlled, pain and suffering that could have been avoided, death that could have been forestalled. Of obscenely high bills, raises deferred, too often financial futures completely ruined.
Our health care system is failing us. Despite consuming a large and increasing share of our income, it too often delivers embarrassingly poor outcomes and experience. There is a growing gap between costs and quality, and everyone paying the bill- the government, employers, and individuals- are getting poor value for their money.
Most efforts to solve this problem are incremental, and have proven largely ineffective. We believe the only way forward is to start from scratch, and rebuild the delivery model from the ground up. We are starting with primary care, and believe that a totally redesigned primary care model can help confer agency on patients and allow them to better realign costs and quality to create higher value health care.
